ANTIQUE JAPONISME HAND PAINTED IMPERIAL PSL AUSTRIA VASE FALL FOLIAGE
Offered here is an antique hand painted Imperial PSL Empire vase decorated in a unique Japonisme style. Japonisme refers to the influence of japanese art in western cultures such as in Europe or the Americas. The vase has a plump stylized bluebird perched on a branch with orange and peach colored leaves. Two golden rows envelop the entire piece and act as an interesting border to the painted scene. The rest of the top and bottom are painted in a rare slate blue finish that is not often seen by Austrian companies. The piece is quite lustrous in light giving off subtle hints of purples, reds, greens, and varying blues.
The PL stands for the Pfeiffer & Lowenstein Factory of Schlackenwerth, Bohemia, Austria which was created in 1873 and operated until just after World War II when it closed in 1949.
Measures 9” High x 4 1/2" Diameter
The piece is in very good condition with a few scratches and several small manufacturing bumps. The gold gilt around the top and bottom edges are also somewhat worn. No crazing or cracks.
Marked “Imperial Austria” with a cursive “PL” in an oval and a crown at the top. See photo.
