Antique French Sewing Casket Box Coffret 1790's Cut Steel Fleur de Lis with Mirror

Lovely antique French 1790-1820 sewing box, coffet . Museum piece.

The velvet is dark burgundy wine color with appliqued leather fleur de lis, scrolls with darkened impressed lattice work. The edges have raised leather made to mimic blackened iron. Features scattered cut steel rivets in round and half moon shapes on the leather. It appears the box might have a wood core on the ends.

Interior is finished in a pink silk moire and has a loops where sewing itemswould have been stored.

Two round leather handles. One is not attached.

Original mirror included.

Beautifully decorated original round lock, enameled silver and orange in a floral design. We do not have a key. Over it's life, the strap separated from the lid. It is attached to the lock.

The shape looks like it could a purse, however, this is the perfered shape for ladies sewing casket/box of the French courts.

Please see pictures for condition- very old. One handle unattached. Normal age related wear to the velvet and leather. This piece was well loved and used for a very long time. More modern sewing implements, found in the box, are included. From a local South Jersey estate.
