We are offering an antique oil painting by “A. Bartoli”, measuring about 26” wide x 15.75” high without the frame and 29.5” wide x 19.5” high with the frame. This piece depicts a tropical Hawaiian setting with an expansive blue sky, a river winding past a house with a thatched roof, and tall palm trees dotting the landscape. The frame is in a beautiful Victorian style, with a detailed scroll about the edge that really makes the painting stand out.
If this painting was cleaned and the old varnish was removed it would look like it did when it was painted! The colors wood pop. It is so old!
Info:
British Captain James Cook arrives and the era of Western contact begins January 18, 1778.
In 1819 King Kamehameha falls ill. On his death bed he follows the British monarchy's lead and names his eldest son as his heir. He names his favorite wife prime minister.
After King Kamehameha's death, Kamehameha II abandons the traditional religion. All religious images are burned and the temples destroyed.
This piece is the perfect addition to any collection.
The piece is signed “A. Bartoli” and has a year written on it, but due to aging of the paint we cannot confirm exactly which year had been written. The date looks to be 1819 , Georgian Era. Perhaps painted by a sailor who stayed on the island.
Good condition with expected age-related wear. There is yellowing to the varnish, as is expected of a piece of this age. There are two scratches to the paint in the top center and top right, both in the sky, and one scratch along the very edge at the bottom left, a result of shifting in the frame. The painting has been repaired at some point, a patch on the back and some restoration over an old tear. The frame is in excellent condition.
