Antique Ambrotype Baby Photograph in Union / Thermoplastic Case c. 1855–1865

Original mid-19th century ambrotype portrait of a seated infant housed in a gutta percha (Union/thermoplastic) case.

The image is on glass (non-magnetic plate), confirming it as an ambrotype rather than a tintype. The child is shown seated in a formal studio pose, wearing a patterned dress. The cheeks are gently hand-painted with red tinting. Case is lined with what feels like red velvet.

Approx. Date: 1855–1865
Photographic Type: Ambrotype on glass
Case Type: Gutta Percha / Union Case (thermoplastic)

Measurements:
• Case: 2 3/8" x 3" x 5/8"
• Inner Frame Opening: 1 7/8" x 2 3/8"

Condition:
Image appears to be in very good condition. Some minor tarnish/oxidation to the gilt mat. Case exterior exhibits finish wear and edge losses consistent with age (see photos). The hinge is intact, but the case has separted into two parts. The hinge will still keep it closed when engaged. Velvet lining present with expected wear.
