Antique Chinese 3 Wise Men Monkeys Hand Carved Bovine Bone Figurine Statue Set Wood Base
Antique Chinese hand-carved figurine set, c1900, China. Dark brown and reddish wooden footed-pedestal base platforms the Three Wise Monkey "See no Evil, Speak no Evil, Hear no Evil" symbolic design. Oxen bone figurines are expertly carved/engraved and show some sections of cross banding. Super detailed monkeys are all seated in a full squat position, have large, very pronounced, protruding ears, and show distinct individual facial expressions. Middle figure is on a raised section, higher than the two sides. Secured to the base with two connections using some sort of metal connectors. Unmarked, unsigned example.
Measures 5" Long x 4 1/2" High x 1 3/4" Deep. Each figure is roughly 3" H x 1 3/8" W.
Very good condition. Middle figurine is missing the right ear. Tiny crack evident in the snout of the right figurine. All three are stable and secure but the two end pieces are a tad loose. The wood base does show age/wear, with horizontally-lined wear visible in the center, and finish-loss exhibited on the ends. Red base shows through on some of the worn sections.
