This is a charming and highly displayable early 20th-century German Erzgebirge wooden toy scene, consisting of hand-carved and hand-painted soldiers in red coats paired with modular castle wall and tower sections. These pieces are attributed to the Erzgebirge region of Germany, long celebrated for its tradition of small-scale wooden folk toys and Christmas village figures.
The set features 5 classic putz soldier figures with black caps and rifles (one missing), turned from wood and finished with expressive, naïve facial details and bright red uniforms. Accompanying the figures are wooden wall segments, towers with conical roofs, and an arched gate, all decorated with faux stonework patterns. The pieces are modular, allowing for flexible arrangement as a miniature fortification, parade ground, or holiday village accent.
Condition:
Overall very good antique condition. Paint wear, small chips, and surface loss are present throughout, particularly on the bases and raised details, consistent with age and prior use. No modern repairs observed. All wear is cosmetic and contributes to the authentic folk-art character.
