Antique Grand Tour Cast Iron Bas Relief Plaque – Classical Roman Profile
Antique Grand Tour style cast iron bas relief plaque depicting a classical Roman male profile wearing a laurel wreath with a nice bronze colored finish.
We've found other examples that claim this to be bronze, however, material testing (along with the color on the back) confirms the piece is highly magnetic, indicating cast iron rather than bronze. The surface retains a dark, aged patina with areas of oxidation and natural wear consistent with age.
Likely late 19th to early 20th century, produced in the popular Grand Tour tradition when classical imagery was widely reproduced for decorative and educational purposes.
