Antique Hackwood & Co. Black Basalt Creamer Pitcher (c. Early 19th Century)

This is an elegant black basalt stoneware creamer pitcher by Hackwood & Co., an English pottery firm active in the early 19th century in Hanley, Staffordshire. The piece features a refined matte black finish, classical footed form, and incised banded decoration with a textured basketweave-style lower body.
William Hackwood began his career as a skilled modeler for Josiah Wedgwood in the late 18th century. He was one of Wedgwood’s most talented craftsmen, producing portrait medallions and decorative designs that became iconic in neoclassical ceramics. Building on this training and reputation, Hackwood later established his own pottery works in Staffordshire, producing high-quality basalt and stoneware pieces in the Wedgwood tradition. This creamer reflects that lineage, blending Wedgwood’s influence with Hackwood’s own artistry.
This item would've been produced sometime in the early 1800's.
