Japanese Hand-Painted Satsuma-Style Kutani Vase with Lion Mask Handles
This large Satsuma porcelain vase features richly detailed hand-painting with multiple cartouche panels depicting traditional courtly and landscape scenes, including figures in formal dress, architectural settings, and mountainous backdrops. These narrative panels are set against a dense cobalt-blue ground decorated with gilt scrolling, florals, and patterned reserves.
The vase is further embellished with prominent raised lion mask (shishi) handles in iron red with gilt detailing, each fitted with a molded gilt ring. The rim and foot are accented with extensive gold decoration, adding visual weight and formality to the piece. The interior shows an off-white glazed finish typical of export wares of this type.
The base bears a red rectangular Kutani (九谷) mark along with the English text “Hand Painted Satsuma,” a combination commonly used on Japanese export ceramics produced for the Western market. While “Satsuma” is referenced in the export labeling, the Kutani mark may indicate stylistic influence or workshop tradition rather than strict regional origin. These details lead us to suspect this was a export-intended piece made sometimes in the early 20th century.
This piece is decorative in nature and well-suited for display, reflecting the ornate aesthetic popular in late 19th to early 20th century Japanese export porcelain
