Antique Limoges Peint Main Trinket Box – Order of the Garter Emblem – France

This is a finely made Limoges, France trinket box, hand-painted (peint main) with mounted an ornate gilt metal frame with a hinged lid and clasp. The porcelain body is decorated with soft floral motifs in pastel tones, accented with delicate brushwork and subtle gilding. Quality example of hand painted porcelain.

The front clasp features a raised gilt Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom, incorporating the Order of the Garter insignia. The surrounding motto reads “Honi soit mal y pense”, meaning “Shame on him who thinks evil of it.” This motto has been associated with the United Kingdom's Monarchy (outside of Scotland) for centuries, and is traditionally used with royal and ceremonial regalia.

The interior is finished in white glaze with hand-painted blue accents, and the underside is marked “MC Peint Main” along with a Limoges, France stamp, confirming hand decoration and origin. The box closes securely and displays well from all angles.

As beautifully as it displays, it can be used functionally as a trinket box, small ring box in the bedroom, vanity or kitchen, pill box, etc.
