The craftsmanship and proportions indicate this was a dessert or luncheon knife setThe set remains in its period felt-lined storage roll, designed to protect the pearl handles from abrasion and humidity.Original set is 13, but there are 12 knives.
Meriden Cutlery Co. was founded in 1855 in Meriden, Connecticut, and later became part of the larger International Silver Company conglomerate by 1898. Their sterling-mounted mother-of-pearl cutlery was considered among the finest American silverplate production of the period, often rivaling English firms such as Walker & Hall or Mappin Brothers in quality.
The sterling ferrule mark and decorative neoclassical motif align with the 1890s–1905 aesthetic—a transitional period from ornate Victorian toward the more restrained Edwardian style.
