They were commissioned by King Louis-Phillipe and the subjects were two of his daughters. They are titled "Marie Adelaide of France as Diana" and Henriette of France as Flora."
Besides gorgeous gold leaf frame, they come with pale blue silk moire bow and hanging wide ribbon. Hang the bow on the wall , until the ribbon meets behind the frame. Creates an elegant French look!
Nattier had painted Louis’ daughters before with Henriette as Flora and Adelaide as Diane. The Frenchman was known for his allegorical depictions, a style that would go out of fashion by the end of the 18th century. For this mid-century work, though, he was perfect. Re-imagining the Filles de France as goddesses or mythological figures was something he could capture with with romantic efficiency, portraying Louis’ daughters as both naive, gentle creatures and powerful earthly beings.
Photogravure printing was invented in 1879 and the basic process is to photographically transfer an image to a metal plate, etch the image on the plate then print from it.
Gorgeous gilt gold leaf frames! Beautiful pair have pale blue silk noire ribbons and bows to hang above them on the wall. Excellent condition except for normal age related discoloring on the mats, and top shield gesso has a crack, missing a little bit on the side. Nothing that takes away from it's beauty.
