Great subject matter!
We are offering an antique Art Deco original tempera painting, measuring about 21.5” high x 16.75” wide in glass covered frame.
This piece is a lovely art deco pin up, a woman sitting under an umbrella in a toy wagon, with the title “The Covered Wagon”. The woman is dressed in a yellow bathing suit ensemble and is peeking playfully at the viewer from underneath her bright yellow umbrella. The wagon itself is yellow and red and reads “Express Coaster” along the side. This piece may have been original art for an advertisement in a local magazine or painted from the cover? Not signed.

Ellis Antiques is located in Collingswood, NJ, right across the bridge from Center City Philadelphia. Ladies Home Journal, The Saturday Evening Post, Holiday, The American Home, Jack & Jill, and Country Gentleman, among many other magazines, were published in Philadelphia at Curtis Publishing. Artists & designers, who lived locally in the surrounding towns , worked for Curtis. Work would be submitted, signed on the back. This came from the estate of a manager at Curtis. We did not take it apart.
This piece is the perfect addition to any collection. Amazing for an Art Deco collector!
The back of the frame is constructed of another painting, this one of a young infant. This reuse of art supplies is incredibly common and gives a bit of life and uniqueness to the piece. Looks to be painted on wood or masonite, something wood like.
Good to very good condition. There is some dirt on the inside of the glass of the frame, and the hanging wire is missing. There is some cracking to the paint, particularly in the brown tones and along the woman’s legs, which is to be expected of old tempera paint.
