A Rare Piece from the Hearst Collection with Deep Historical Roots
This exquisite early 19th-century Sunderland Lustre Sporting Jug is more than just a collector’s item—it is a museum-worthy artifact once owned by media magnate William Randolph Hearst and displayed at the prestigious Marshall Field & Company exhibition in Chicago.
Shaped in a flattened pear form with huntsmen and dogs in relief, this jug is a prime example of English ceramic craftsmanship from the era. From a Notable Legal Mind to a Media Mogul’s Collection
This jug was originally part of the renowned Robert Gilchrist Collection, one of the most distinguished early assemblages of 18th and 19th-century English ceramics.
Robert Gilchrist Jr. (1825–1888) was not only a passionate collector of fine ceramics but also a key figure in New Jersey’s legal and political history. As Attorney General of New Jersey (1870–1875), he played a role in shaping legal reforms and even served on a commission to revise the state constitution. A Civil War veteran and former state legislator, Gilchrist’s influence extended beyond law—his collection was considered one of the finest of its kind, featuring Staffordshire, Leeds, Sunderland, Davenport, and Wedgwood pieces.
After his passing, his collection was auctioned at the American Art Galleries in New York, managed by the American Art Association. It was at this sale that William Randolph Hearst, one of the most ambitious and prolific art collectors of the 20th century, acquired this jug—adding it to his growing empire of historical artifacts.
William Randolph Hearst: The Media Tycoon and Art Collector
William Randolph Hearst (1863–1951) wasn’t just a newspaper publisher—he changed the face of media. Inheriting the San Francisco Examiner, he aggressively expanded his empire, acquiring major newspapers across the U.S., including the New York Journal. He pioneered sensationalist “yellow journalism” to drive readership, a strategy that shaped modern news consumption.
His influence extended beyond journalism—Hearst was one of the world’s most extravagant art collectors, amassing an unrivaled collection of paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and rare antiques. His insatiable appetite for acquiring historical artifacts led him to personally attend major auctions, where he selectively purchased pieces that fascinated him—including this jug. His vast collection filled warehouses, museums, and his iconic Hearst Castle in California. Many of these acquisitions were handled through the International Studio Art Corporation (ISAC), a Hearst-owned entity dedicated to managing his immense inventory of rare finds.
A Piece Exhibited in the Heart of Chicago’s High Society
This Sunderland Lustre Jug was one of many pieces displayed in Marshall Field & Company’s famous “Collector’s Room” exhibition in Chicago. The department store, renowned for catering to the country’s most distinguished collectors, played a crucial role in bringing Hearst’s vast holdings into public view. The event solidified his reputation not just as a media mogul but as one of the most influential collectors of his time.
A Legacy Piece for the Serious Collector
This jug isn’t just a decorative antique—it’s a tangible connection to history. From the legal chambers of a distinguished 19th-century Attorney General to the hands of a media mogul who shaped the 20th century, its provenance speaks to ambition, influence, and the preservation of fine art.
A rare opportunity to own a piece with ties to both the political and media powerhouses of their time.
