Antique Regency English Porcelain Lamp Pr Kate Greenaway Victorian Pastoral
We are offering a pair of antique porcelain English lamps hand painted with Kate Greenaway children book decorations, measuring about 12”H x 5.5” W x 4” Deep x (19” with the lamp shades).
The porcelains started life as vases, and was converted into lamps in the 1930's-1940's . Both lamps work well. Cords are OK. Nice on a night stand.
One lamp, labelled “January”, depicts two girls in matching yellow and pink dresses and bonnets looking concerned as a boy falls on an icy lake. The other, labelled “June”, depicts a country road where a young, well-dressed man takes the hand of a young lady. Both pieces have sides decorated with blue flower decals, and the backs are matching hand painted flowers, though one is pink and blue and the other purple and yellow.
The English illustrator Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) dramatically changed the art of the picture book. For many modern critics, her work represents the essence of a Victorian childhood. For over a hundred years, Kate Greenaway's works have been honored as representing the essence of illustrations for children.
This pair is the perfect addition to any collection.
Condition: Very good with some age related wear. Some of the gold paint around the edges has worn off.
