Antique sterling silver match safe (vesta) by Howard & Co., featuring a detailed sculptural horse head design. The case opens on a hinged lid and retains the original striker plate on the base. Marked “Sterling” with the Clover for Howard & Co.
Howard & Co. works don't always get the credit they deserved, but produced many works that rivaled, if not outdid, their more well known competitors.
Measures approximately 2 3/4" long x 1 1/4" wide and weighs 25.2 grams. Nicely modeled with good detail to the mane, ears, and facial features.
Condition:
Good antique condition. Surface wear and light scratches consistent with age and use. Hinge functions properly and lid closes securely. Striker plate present on the bottom. No major dents or repairs observed. Lid does "snap" shut, however, it does open fairly easily with quick movement.
