Antique Wedgwood Basalt English Bull Dog w/ Glass Amber Eyes c. 1915 ~Very Good Condition~

Here we have an Antique Wedgwood black basalt figure of an English Bulldog, designed by Ernest Light in 1914 as part of a series of figures that included a cat, poodle, elephant, and various birds. This series is noted for its naturalistic modeling and featured glass eyes in varying colors. This particular example is marked "WEDGWOOD," has small white/creamy glass eyes.
Inspired by dense volcanic basalt rock, "Black Basalt" was introduced by Josiah Wedgwood in 1768. The dark color was achieved by adding manganese and carr, a slurry to the clay. Wedgwood preferred to use ball clay from Dorset in southwest England. It was used to create elegant, lustrous pieces, including replicas of newly excavated Etruscan pottery, and became a significant commercial success.

This pieced is in very good condition. We noted no chips or cracks. All imperfections appear to be from manufacturing process, including ventilation hole on the bottom of the piece.
