Antique Wedgwood Black Basalt Widow Sybil Mourning 3 Piece Tea Set Radial Rare
We are offering an antique Wedgwood tea set: a teapot, creamer, and sugar bowl. The teapot measures about 4.5” tall and 7.75” at its widest point; the creamer measures about 4” tall and 3.75” at its widest point; the sugar bowl measures about 3.75” tall and 4” at its widest point. This set is in the striking black basalt color, a matte black, with a geometric radial pattern that pairs beautifully with the asymmetric, stark shapes of the porcelain. The lids of both the teapot and sugar bowl feature a rare finial, a shrouded Sybil figure, referred to often as the Widow. The inside of each piece is glazed, while the outside is not. This set was most likely for receiving guests while in mourning, and evokes a Gothic mood to the modern eye. This truly unique set is the perfect addition to any collection!
The bottom of each piece is marked “Wedgwood” along with some miscellaneous numbers and letters, dating it to sometime before 1891. This set most likely dates to the Regency period, the early 19th century.
Excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There is a very small manufacturing error in the rim of the sugar bowl, which is not a chip. Please inspect the provided photos carefully, as they are an extension of our written description.
