Antique Victorian Staffordshire Porcupine Spill Vase – Hand-Painted Ceramic Spill Holder, c. 1850-1880
Here we have a rare example of Victorian Staffordshire pottery. This hand-painted glazed earthenware spill vase is modeled in the form of a reclining porcupine. The body is decorated in natural brown, black, and white glazes, with multiple pierced holes along the back designed to hold spills—small rolled paper tapers used to transfer fire from a hearth or candle; serving both as a functional and decorative adornment on the mantel or near the fireplace. Today, it makes an unusual addition to any collection of Staffordshire figures or Victorian era pottery. We speculate this piece was likely crafted circa 1850-1880.
Wonderful to use as a toothpick holder now!
