Original vintage promotional poster for the Newport Jazz Festival / New York, held June 22 – July 1, 1979. The design features a vibrant watercolor-style portrait titled “Lady” by renowned American artist LeRoy Neiman, signed in the image and dated 1979. This is an original period poster produced for festival promotion, sponsored by Schlitz.
The Newport Jazz Festival, founded in 1954 by George Wein, is one of the most important and influential jazz festivals in history. By the 1970s, the festival had expanded beyond Newport, Rhode Island, establishing a major presence in New York City, where performances were staged across some of the city’s most prestigious venues.
This 1979 New York edition featured concerts at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Radio City Music Hall, and Roseland Ballroom. During this era, Newport Jazz Festival lineups regularly included major jazz, blues, and fusion artists such as Stan Getz, Carmen McRae, Gerry Mulligan, Ramsey Lewis, Mongo Santamaría, Mel Tormé, Buddy Rich, Hugh Masekela, Grover Washington Jr., and B.B. King. Truly a premier showcase for both established legends and contemporary performers.
LeRoy Neiman is internationally recognized for his expressive, high-energy depictions of music, sports, and cultural life. His long association with jazz imagery makes this poster especially desirable to collectors of jazz memorabilia, music history, and Neiman’s work.
