Original signed etching by American artist Irwin D. Hoffman, titled “The Unsung Hero.” Hoffman's work is known for its powerful portrayals of laborers, immigrants, and working-class subjects. This etching is a very strong example of his work. Hoffman studied at the Boston Museum School and later worked throughout Europe, Russia, and Mexico on scholarship. He exhibited widely and was celebrated for his sensitive depictions of everyday people, with exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Brooklyn Museum, LACMA, Honolulu Academy, and others.
The etching is pencil-titled “The Unsung Hero –” at lower left and signed “Irwin D. Hoffman” at lower right. A period biographical label from Associated American Artists, 711 Fifth Avenue, New York is affixed to the back, confirming the origin and edition series.
This exact work has been held in museum collections, including the High Museum of Art (Accession 1991.162).
Framed in a vintage carved and gilded frame with a deep plum mat. The frame shows light expected wear. The print itself displays mild age toning consistent with age, but no tears or distracting damage.
