Antique Wedgwood Black Basalt Jug – Shamrock, Rose & Harp Relief Design – 19th Century

This fine Wedgwood black basalt jug displays an intricate band of raised decoration featuring classical floral and national motifs, including shamrocks, Tudor roses, and harps. The crisp relief work is characteristic of Wedgwood’s high-quality basalt ware, first developed in the 18th century and continued into the 19th.

The jug has a squared handle with scroll terminals and a rounded body with fluted upper section above the relief. The interior is finished with a glossy black glaze, contrasting the matte basalt exterior.

On the underside, the jug is impressed:

  • WEDGWOOD

  • MADE IN ENGLAND

  • Additional impressed marks: 42 and a small circular potter’s mark.

  • Dimensions: 5” L x 3 1/2” W x 3 3/4” H

  • Weight: 8 oz

  • Condition: Structurally sound, though with some surface wear and evidence of an old handle repair (see photos). Displays well and retains strong detail throughout.
