VTG 1950 Chagall 1st Ed Contes de Boccace Vol VI No 24 Verve Decameron Art Book
VERVE, WITH ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHIC COVERS BY CHAGALL AND 26 FULL-PAGE HELIOGRAVURES
We are offering a vintage first edition hardcover art book, measuring about 10.25” wide, 14” long, and 0.5” tall. The pages are not numbered. Published by Vevre in France in 1950, this book is a compendium of art created for Boccaccio’s Decameron.
What Chagall produced was a present-day counterpart to colored reproductions of the miniatures in a fifteenth-century illuminated manuscript of Boccaccio's work. For each of his drawings he drew inspiration from the miniature of the same scene and the old and new illustrations are reproduced side by side in the pages of Verve.
Very good condition with expected age-related wear. The original dust jacket is included, with some foxing, tears about the spine and tape. The pages have been yellowed with time. Please inspect the pictures carefully, as they are an extension of our written description. This is a lovely exploration of how different artists interpret and choose to represent stories, and how art has changed over time. This piece is the perfect addition to any collection.
