Vintage Chinese Hetian Spinach Jade Carving Statue w/ Base Qilin Good Fortune 12”
We are offering a vintage Chinese spinach jade statue, measuring about 12” high x 11” wide x 2” deep without the base.
The base is most likely rosewood (?) and made to fit this statue specifically. Sits well in the base and on a table
Included is the original box, measuring about 15.5” high x 11.75” wide x 4” deep. The box condition is good on the outside, not great inside.
The piece is carved out of a single piece of hetian jade and depicts in incredible detail a large Qilin and one smaller alongside other symbols of longevity, like a medicine gourd. Highlighted by the natural shifts in color of the stone, a figure sits on the back of the Qilin, carrying peepal/ bodhi leaves. The back side is also carved similarly.
Information: Qilin, Wade-Giles ch’i-lin, in Chinese mythology, the unicorn whose rare appearance often coincides with the imminent birth or death of a sage or illustrious ruler. (The name is a combination of the two characters qi “male,” and lin, “female.”) A qilin has a single horn on its forehead, a yellow belly, a multicoloured back, the body of a deer, and the tail of an ox. Gentle of disposition, it never walks on verdant grass or eats living vegetation.
This piece is the perfect addition to any collection. 1950-1960's.
The jade on its own weighs 3992 grams, heavy. MidCentury modern , Hollywood Regency decoration for your residence!
Very good condition with no chips. There has been a repair around where the man is holding the leaf, but this is barely noticeable.
