1970s Sam Ash Oliver Sound Inc G-60R Amplifier Head w 2 1x10” Speaker Cabinets
ITEM:

Another very unusual find, this is an early 1970sSam Ash branded Oliver Sound Inc G-60R solid state single channel 60 watt amplifier head powering a pair of 1 X 10” speaker cabinets. A new secondary market foot switch is also included.

Due to the weight & fragile nature of this piece of vintage electronic equipment (after all, she's approximately 50 years old), we will not be able to ship this amp head & pair of cabs. This is being priced & offered for local pick up only. If that is an impossible task for you, please contact us & we might be able to accommodate you.

Please see our new VIDEO featuring the uber talented, multi instrumentalist Dave "Catfish" Fecca!

DESCRIPTION & A LITTLE HISTORY:

Very difficult tofind much info online about this gear, unless you know the specific search words to use. But, it looks very cool, is very portable & it sounds amazing! EQ features the typical controls plus reverb, tremolo & she’s very LOUD!
This product was probably manufactured for Sam Ash by Oliver Sound Inc (Oliver Amplifiers) either in Brooklyn, NY, Linden, NJ, or Westbury Long Island, NY. More than likely Westbury, Long Island, NY manufactured this specific model for Sam Ash.
Oliver Amplifiers manufactured for Sam Ash from the late 1960s through the early 1970s. Jess Oliver was an integral employee of Ampeg prior to striking out on his own with Oliver Sound Inc. In 1966. The Westbury LI, NY factory shut down for good in late 1974. For more in depth info about Jess Oliver & his company, Oliver Sound Inc, please check out vintageguitar.com & the article “Oliver Sound, Inc. ’Flex’ beyond Ampeg” in their Nov, 1999 issue. An interesting read! We thank vintageguitar.com & credit them for the great info which they published in that Nov 1999 issue.
One of the best features of this unit is the players’ ability to separate the cabs as far apart as your cables will allow, for almost a stereo audio effect. or, the cabs can be stacked on top of one another with the head on top or placed wherever the length of your cables will allow. Each cab has an Eminence 10” woofer, which are original & fully broken in, obviously. Unit sounds great overall, and seems louder than the 60 watt rating.

CONDITION:

We've assessed this unit to be in very good condition. There are assorted bumps & bruises & some minimal assorted tolex loss on primarily the 2 speaker cabinets from years of play wear. The amplifier head has some denting on the aluminum strip that forms the edge between the grill cloth & the edge of the front control panel. This design is similar to a drip edge on a 1968 Fender Silver Face combo amp or amp head, except that this metal strip on this Sam Ash head is only mounted on the top edge of the grill. There are 4 visible dark (black) stain marks on the grill cloth on one of the speaker cabs.

As far as maintenance & repairs that our tech performed, here’s the low down: the power supply caps were replaced, all of the pots were cleaned, the offset was adjusted, the jacks were tightened & cleaned & 1 of the speakers (which was found to be out of phase) was corrected. Also, he changed out the power cable and plug to a proper grounded plug for safety.

This amplifier head was professionally inspected & repaired by our highly regarded audio tech at JHN Audio, out of Barracks Trading Post in Maple Shade, NJ……… so this amp head is now ready to rip!

This was recorded using an iPhone 14 Pro using only natural diffused light, This vintage 1970s Sam Ash Oliver Sound Inc G-60R Solid State Amplifier Head w 2 1x10” Speaker Cabinets was the amplifier source for our 1981 Ibanez ST1200 BS Studio Series 6/12 String Double Neck Guitar which is also for sale on our Reverb listings. Axe was unmic'ed and no additional external effects were added. Guitar was demonstrated by our dear friend, professional musician, composer, guitarist, luthier, mensch & co-founder of the popular recording artists April Mae & The June Bugs, the extraordinary Dave "Catfish" Fecca. Dave played this axe through this specific amp in the front room at our bricks & mortar shop, Ellis Antiques, also the base of operations for Ace's Axe Attic. We sure hope you enjoy his double neck pickin' & cool banter!
