Ellis Antiques is now representing this fabulous Los Angeles California American artist Matthew Harlan in our shop. All of his art ships directly from Los Angeles. This is an original oil painting on canvas hand done in Matthew’s studio. Matthew uses high quality oil paints and employs techniques to ensure that his work will live on for years to come Painting has a protective varnish.


I completed this painting in early November a few weeks before returning back home to New Jersey to visit my family. I’ve always had particularly fond memories of Autumn. Who can resist the plethora of fall inspired aromas,  food staples and experiences? Every time fall rolls around, it’s easy for me to get lost in the warmth and comfort foods I crave like apple cider, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, butternut squash and corn soup, cinnamon rolls and mashed sweet potatoes. I would also easily lose myself in quiet reverie getting to watch the thousands of leaves start to change color as the daylight faded more and more each week. I would say my childhood experiences have instilled in me a certain strong nostalgia for the Autumn experience as a whole. A few years ago I made the decision to move to Los Angeles. One of the things that dawned on me later that Fall was that southern California did not offer anywhere close to the same kind of Autumn experience I was used to back east. The warmer weather prevented the leaves from changing to such dramatic shades of color and I found myself craving those comfort foods somewhat less.

This painting, bred out of a deep yearning and nostalgia for the Autumn experience, is full of bold geometric shapes and warm, fall inspired colors. I enjoyed having the ability to channel that nostalgia into an abstract, vivid expression far away from what words alone could portray. One of things I love about this painting is the color harmony that evolved throughout its execution. I opted to use strong, opaque color mixes and every color that occupies space on the canvas has a small portion of it’s neighboring colors within it. I focused on small, randomized brush strokes to build up subtle textures within various forms while opting to use smooth, velvety brushwork in others for some contrast. As a result, this painting is strongly imbued with an abundance of warm and positive energy. I hope you derive as much joy from it as I have.
