“ For most of us, it can be quite difficult to put words to many of the emotions that we may be feeling at certain points in our lives. Heartache, despair, grief, joy, exhilaration, resentment, jealousy, serenity; each of these emotional states has the ability to be uniquely expressed in the individuals who are experiencing them. For me, that unique expression often takes the form of an abstract painting. I find more often than not that I’m able to explore deeply seated subconscious emotions more thorougly the more that I engage and experiment with abstractly influenced compositions.

In this painting, the first of an ongoing series, I attempted to sit with grief after recently experiencing the death of my dog Ace. I had no idea upon starting the painting that it would slowly take the form of a closeup of some kind of window. It was difficult to express through words what I must have needed to express through color and simple form. What I perceive when I view this painting is an unknown entity, possibly myself, sitting in some kind of bizarre interior setting, gazing out of a glowing window. Breaking down the composition vertically into two halves, we see what looks like reddish brown curtains or blinds on the left side of the painting. In the right half, there appears to be a pair of strangely inverted landscapes making up the view from each window pane. In the top right quadrant, a lifeless desert environment with a few wispy clouds and below, an ocean of sorts possibly full of flowing life beneath the surface. Both scenes are turned to the left at a 90 degree right angle to the horizon line. Perhaps this was my own subconsious way of symbolizing an inverted view of reality while attempting to navigate the world temporarily through the lens of grief.
