Antique Cobalt Blue Underwood’s Inks Bottle & Ink Well Lot
Pair of antique cobalt blue glass ink containers, including an embossed “UNDERWOOD’S INKS” bottle and a small square ink well. The larger bottle features a bold deep cobalt coloration with applied lip and embossed lettering, likely dating to the late 19th century. Underwood’s ink bottles are associated with writing and office supply use during the fountain pen and dip pen era, when vividly colored glass was commonly used both for branding and light protection of ink contents.
The smaller square ink well complements the larger bottle nicely and appears to be period as well, with hand-finished characteristics and rich cobalt coloring throughout. The ink well is unmarked.
Approximate dimensions:
Underwood’s bottle: 3 1/2" x 9 3/4"
Ink well: approx. 2” x 2" x 2 1/4”
*Condition*
Good condition with wear consistent with age and use. The larger Underwood’s bottle shows scattered scratches, surface wear, and manufacturing irregularities throughout, with notable roughness/chipping around the applied lip and upper rim area, as well as ink staining. The smaller ink well also shows surface wear, residue, scratches, and small chips/flaking around the threaded rim. Both pieces retain strong color and display well despite the wear. Please review all photos carefully for exact condition details.
