Antique German Celluloid Floral Vanity Boudoir Hanky Box Silk Lined
Today we have an antique German-made vanity or boudoir box, dating to approximately the early 20th century. The long, low-profile case is decorated throughout with a delicate floral pattern featuring purple and white flowers, green leaves, and small pink accents against a muted gold-brown ground.
The exterior appears to be constructed from thin molded and textured celluloid or a similar early composition material. The gently domed lid and rounded corners give the piece an elegant shape typical of period vanity accessories. Similar German-made boxes are often described as handkerchief, vanity, or boudoir boxes; this smaller example may have been intended for handkerchiefs, jewelry, or other personal accessories.
The underside is clearly marked “Germany.”
The interior of the lid retains its original gathered cream-colored lining, which appears to be silk or silk satin. The lower compartment is lined with a tan textile that appears to be felt or a closely related fabric. The original connecting ribbon or fabric hinge is present but has separated and frayed, as shown.
Approximate dimensions:
4 3/4" long x 2" wide x 1 1/4" high
*Condition*
Good antique condition with age-related wear. There is surface wear, scratching, scuffing, discoloration, edge wear, and losses to the exterior decoration. The base and edges show wear and some deformation. The interior lining is aged and soiled, and the fabric hinge/connecting ribbons are torn, frayed, and separated. Please review all photos closely for the exact condition.
