We are offering this rare original hand-colored lithograph titled “Pharomachrus Auriceps” (Golden Quetzal), from A Monograph of the Trogonidae or Family of Trogons, Part 1 of 4, published in 1858.

This work is from John Gould’s celebrated monograph on trogons, one of his important ornithological publications devoted to this brilliantly colored bird family. John Gould (1804–1881) was an English ornithologist and publisher renowned for producing lavishly illustrated bird books featuring finely detailed lithographs with hand coloring. His works remain highly sought after by collectors of natural history prints and 19th century ornithological art.

This lithograph was drawn and colored by J. Gould & H.C. Richter (Henry Constantine Richter 1821–1902), as noted in the lower left corner, and printed by Hullmandel & Walton, lower right.

John Gould was and is well-known production of richly colored bird plates during the mid-19th century. Gould favored lithography because it allowed for greater artistic control and a more direct translation of the original design, helping preserve the vibrancy and detail of the birds he documented.

This lithograph measures approximately 20" x 13". Frame measures 22.75" x 15.5". Print is behind glass. The frame is much more modern.
