Antique 1915 Panama-California Exposition Souvenir Hanky – USS San Diego Naval Ship
Here we have a rare piece of 20th-century American history is a commemorative handkerchief from the 1915 Panama-California Exposition held in San Diego, in celebration of the completion of the Panama Canal. At its center is a detailed printed image of the U.S.S. San Diego. "The USS San Diego (formerly USS California) was a Pennsylvania-class armored cruiser and the only major warship lost by the U.S. Navy during World War I due to enemy action.
The fabric is a fine, lightweight textile—likely silk or a silk blend—featuring a hand-stitched decorative border with cream-colored embroidery in a diamond-dot pattern. Despite some natural wear and creasing from age, the printed image remains vivid. Below the image, the text reads:
"U.S.S. SAN DIEGO
PANAMA-CALIFORNIA EXPOSITION
JANUARY 1 TO DECEMBER 31
1915"
Dimensions: Approx. 12" diameter (circular)
Condition: Great condition for its age. Some light creasing, edge fraying, and surface wear as expected from a textile over 100 years old. No major stains or tears. Please review photos closely for details.
