Antique Robert Turlington Balsam of Life Medicine Bottle Aqua Glass

Antique embossed aqua glass medicine bottle advertising “Robert Turlington’s Balsam of Life,” one of the most famous patent medicines of the 18th and 19th centuries. Originally patented by Robert Turlington in London in 1744 under the King’s Royal Patent, the medicine was marketed as a cure-all for ailments ranging from stomach complaints and colic to kidney stones and general weakness.

This distinctive paneled bottle design was introduced in 1754 specifically to combat widespread counterfeiting. Its unusual multi-sided shape, embossed lettering, and proprietary appearance made it difficult for imitators to copy, helping establish one of the earliest recognizable branded medicine bottle designs.

Embossing includes references to “ROB’T TURLINGTON,” “BALSAM OF LIFE,” and the King’s Patent.

Based on the glass color and text, we date this bottle roughly to the late 1800's. Possibly 1880-1900's.
