Antique Primitive Wood Sliding Lid Pencil Box c.1900s Pauline Howell Provenance
Wonderful antique primitive wooden sliding lid pencil box dating to approximately 1900s, retaining exceptional original character and personal provenance. Crafted from solid wood, this early school pencil box features a traditional sliding lid and an original inset metal nameplate engraved "PAULINE HOWELL."
Adding to its historical appeal, the underside of the lid bears period handwritten inscriptions that appear to read:
"Pauline Howell"
"8th Grade"
"Ward School"
And some other writing which we were unable to decipher.
While the specific Ward School has not been identified, schools organized by municipal wards were common throughout the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This documented ownership gives the box a tangible connection to an American student's school days over a century ago.
The box displays an attractive aged patina with honest wear from decades of use. Its simple handcrafted construction and warm, well-worn finish make it an excellent example of early American schoolhouse memorabilia.
Condition:
Good antique condition with expected age-related wear. Surface scratches, scuffs, finish loss, and patina throughout are consistent with years of classroom use. The sliding lid functions properly, the original engraved nameplate remains securely attached, and the handwritten inscriptions are still visible, though partially faded. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are part of the description.
