Antique Brown’s Dentifrice Apothecary Jar Bottle Curtis & Brown Boston
Antique late 19th to early 20th century glass apothecary dental preparation jar for Brown’s Dentifrice, retaining its original cork stopper, contents and partial paper advertising label listing manufacturer information for Curtis & Brown Mfg. Co. of Boston, Massachusetts still partially legible. The jar features a substantial ground lip with oversized cork and paneled body form commonly associated with pharmacy and dental counter display containers of the period.
“Dentifrice” was the historical term for tooth-cleaning powder or paste used before modern toothpaste became standard. Surviving examples with original labels and stopper are increasingly difficult to find, especially in attic-found condition like this example.
*Condition*
Good antique condition, but with obvious faults. Coolest factor is that it still contains original contents. We unsure how much as we did not want to damage the cork or expose the contents. Whatever is left in there seems to have clumped/solidified as you would expect with age.
The original paper label shows heavy age-related wear, losses, staining, and fading, though enough remains to clearly identify the product and manufacturer. The original cork stopper is still present and heavily aged with shrinkage, chipping, and surface deterioration from age. No major cracks or large chips noted to the glass body, though there are typical manufacturing irregularities, light scratches, and age wear throughout.
