Antique Dr D Jayne’s Expectorant Aqua Glass Half Size Medicine Bottle Phila., PA

Antique aqua glass embossed medicine bottle for “Dr. D. Jayne’s Expectorant” of Philadelphia. Rectangular form with paneled sides and applied collar lip, featuring strong embossed lettering including “Half Dollar” and “Half Size” on opposing side panels. Likely dating to the mid-to-late 19th century.

Dr. David Jayne was one of Philadelphia’s most prominent patent medicine entrepreneurs during the 1800s. His company, founded in Philadelphia in the 1830s, became nationally known for heavily advertised remedies sold throughout the United States and abroad; including his Almanac which was incredibly prevelant and mass published.. Jayne’s products were among the most recognizable Victorian-era medicines, and his business empire even led to the construction of the famous Jayne Building in Philadelphia (long since demolished)

“Jayne’s Expectorant” was marketed as a remedy for coughs, colds, bronchial irritation, asthma, and other respiratory ailments. Like many patent medicines of the period, it relied heavily on advertising and broad cure-all claims typical of 19th century American medicine.
